November 22, 1963In the fall of 1963, JFK and his wife, Jackie, embraced on a tour of nine states to discuss the issue of natural resources and conservation efforts, hinting that John would be campaigning for this cause in the upcoming 1964 presidential election. Knowing the importance of winning over Texas, plans were made for John and Jackie to spend two days across five of the state’s cities.
He began his tour on November 21, 1963, speaking to the people of San Antonio and Houston before the day let out. The next morning, in spite of the rain, JFK delivered a few brief remarks to the people of Fort Worth before being whisked off to Dallas by the Air Force. After a very brief flight, the Kennedys were met by John Connally, the Texas Governor, and his wife, Nellie, who would be travelling with them to the city’s downtown, where JFK would be speaking at a luncheon. The four of them got into one limousine, which had taken its top off since the rain had cleared, while vice president LBJ and his wife rode in another. It was during this 10-mile drive that JFK was last seen alive. |
